in 2014 i’m going to do more

real articles. news aggregators don’t deserve my valuable online ad eyeballs. they only give you a synopsis then you end up having to link to the source anyway. career and digital media related articles/blogs/op-eds are guilty of giving you a whole heap of nothing and just happening to promote the author’s workplace in the last sentence.

improv. it was fun and a nice escape from the day to day.

shows/performances. these days i really have to make an effort to catch a show, be it music, comedy or the theatre.

beach bumming. i need at least 3 beach outgoings next summer and at least one in the cold months

shrooms brought me here

tonight’s dinner brought me out of retirement. it was that good. the backstory is too long for a facebook post, so here’s some stream of consciousness that you may or may not enjoy.

it all started with yesterday’s lunch. i ended up at the hibachi truck. the vegetable medley included mushrooms. the mushrooms had such a good taste! when i went to the store that evening i got chicken and mushrooms (among other things). when i got home i seasoned the chicken with terriyaki sauce, ground pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. this was after pulling that annoying white bone gristle thing from each strip, which left some of them sort of… not in tact. i decided this would be stir fry chicken and cut them into big chunks. i figured i could cook the chicken the next day and have dinner plus some left over to throw in the salads that i also made (go on with my food prepping self, i know, i know).

when i got home tonight i thought “hmmm, what shall i have for dinner??? i’m not really that hungry after having a heavy lunch, but when has that stopped me before?” so to the fridge i went. Continue reading shrooms brought me here

i had written a clever intro for this blog post with calculations of how often george zimmerman called 911 in the weeks before killing trayvon martin. but then i found out that the 46 calls he made to 911 were over a period of 8 years, not 2 months. womp, womp. still, 46 is a lot of emergencies.

most of zimmerman’s observations, alerts and issues didn’t warrant a call to 911. they were more appropriate for what we here in new york would report to 311 (the things 311 handles). the daily beast compiled a summary of zimmerman’s numerous calls and you can see the complete history of calls here from the city of sanford. i must say, this small town has released way more information that i would have expected.

the long walk (almost) home

it’s springtime! almost. spring officially starts on march 20th, but mother nature was kind enough to give us a preview today with temps up to 70 degrees! and with warmth like that, what new yorker can pass up an opportunity to spend some extended time outside?

i planned ahead and wore my sneaks to work. i also brought sweat pants to change into so that i’d be comfortable on my walk. the goal: walk from work in midtown east all the way home to bk. google maps said it would be a little over 8 miles.

well, this show went by pretty quickly and i think we’re getting beterrrrr. listen to the full audio below.

SO SORRY we didn’t get to sanctimonious santorum and his anti learning brigade, but what is there to say? i mean really! we ended up talking oscars, rhi rhi, c beat ’em breezy and touched on some of the issues facing today’s young people.

i have just a few brief thoughts that i want to share about ricky boy. hopefully i get to that in the next day or so, so check back!
